Slow down, follow
the pace and relax with Breathing Light

research based breathing tool to lower your stresslevel

Did you know we take 23.000 breaths a day?

While taking control over your own breathing pace is a great tool towards relaxation and de-stressing.

Breathing Light introduces moving spots of light that replicate the gentle rhythm of breathing, stimulating you to breath along.

A great tool to relax and de-stress, while increasing your ability to focus and concentrate.

Based on science

Breathing Light functions both as an active deep breathing tool as well as a ‘soft fascination’ background tool. Both applications are based on environmental psychology research and were tested by

an environmental psychologist in a real life context.

Deep Breathing Tool

Breathing Light introduces moving spots of light that replicate the gentle rhythm of breathing, stimulting you to breath along in a proven, deep breathing* rhythm.*

*Deep breathing is a relaxation technique in which a person focuses on taking slow, deep breaths through the nose and then out through the mouth using the diaphragm (Martarelli et al, 2011). This affects heart rate variability (HRV), with increased HRV associated with increased parasympathetic nervous system(PNS) activity, the nervous system we use to relax (Levin & Swoap, 2019).

Energy restoring backdrop

The movement and colour changes of Breathing Light are based on natural phenomena, in line with the Attention Restoration Theory (ART)*. The moving spots

of light form just the right amount of stimuli to gaze at and engage with, without overstimulating you. Thereby restoring mental energy and enhancing focus and concentration.

*Attention Restoration Theory (ART), states that effortless attention - and specifically soft fascination - helps to restore mental energy which improves focus and concentration.

Soft fascination (often found in nature scenes) attracts our attention but does not require active involvement, such as watching wind through leaves, rippling water or the clouds. (Kaplan, S. 1995).

"Students are mesmerized
by Breathing Light,
they sit in front of it as
if they're looking at
a fire place"

Marianne van Zanten - director of School Partnership VO Waterland, which comprises thirteen secondary schools in the Dutch region of Purmerend.

Breathing Light was installed in each school, and students were involved in the design process, giving input in workshops and through heart rate measurements.
